D.J. Wright plays basketball for Walla Walla Warriors Orofino graduated D.J. Wright plays college basketball for the Walla Walla Warriors, who took fourth place at the 2010 NWAACC Championships this month. Walla Walla seized the lead early in the first half and went on to take down the Mt. Hood Saints 71-66. Walla Walla was paced by Wright's 21 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. Jason Smith (15) and Aaron Van de Graaf (10) also finished with double-digit scoring. The Saints were led by Jeremy Jones' 13 points and 10 rebounds. Dustin Jones and Garrett Strasburg chipped another 10 points a piece. The Warriors completed their season with a fourth place trophy and an overall record of 22-6 while Mt Hood takes seventh place and compiled a 20-8 season record. It was the best finish for the Warriors since they took fourth in 2004. |

Lady Maniacs open season with two wins The Lady Maniacs opened softball season on the right note with two wins at home, downing Priest River 9-7 and knocked off Kamiah 5-4 March 12. Orofino scored a run in the sixth inning against Kamiah to break a 4-4 tie, and Tabby Haskett finished out the win on the mound for a complete game. She also smacked a double at the plate. Coach Shannon Erbst said the Maniacs have just four returning players on varsity this season, but she was pleased with the early play of her newcomers. Maniacs lose 2-1 against Kellogg The Maniacs lost their opener against Kellogg 8-7 on March 12, before going on to defeat the Wildcats 13-3 and 12-1 the following day. Kellogg 8, Orofino 7 In the opener, Kellogg scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh to take down Orofino. Trevor Bansemer went 2-for-3 with three RBI for Orofino, which walked seven batters and plunked two. "We walked too many guys today," Orofino coach Bo Cummings said. The Maniacs spotted Kellogg three runs in the opener, thanks to walks and passed balls, before erupting for six runs in the third inning, sparked by a two-run double by Ricky Breeden. Welch went 3-for-4 in that game, with a pair of two-run doubles, and also pitched the first five innings, striking out 10 and walking three. Nick Pomponio drove in three runs in the second game, while the Maniacs drew eight walks and were hit by five pitches.
