Gail Marie Frazier, 93, former resident

Gail Marie Frazier, 93, formerly of Greer, Orofino and Kamiah passed away Monday, Feb. 25, 2008 in Portland, OR.

Gail was born May 24, 1914 in Grangeville to George and Carrie (Stantial) Sly. She moved to Greer in 1919 and graduated from Orofino High School in 1932. She attended Northwest Business College on a scholarship in Spokane, WA.

She married Cliff Rutter in 1933 and they operated a service station in Greer until Cliff went into logging. They later divorced in 1944. She married Bill Frazier and they had a ranch on Eureka Ridge until they divorced in 1951.

Gail worked as a checker at the Glenwood IGA in Orofino until she retired in 1973. During this time among many things she took up oil painting and worked in outfitter hunting camps.

Retirement was not enough for Gail so she joined the Older American Program with the US Forest Service. She worked for Dan Davis, a wildlife biologist, and loved being out of doors. Hunting and fishing were priority, but just being in the woods, camping and sitting around a campfire were the highlights of a weekend from work.

She was known as “the Moose Lady,” counting moose at Elk Summit in the Powell Ranger District for 11 years. The isolation was to her liking and she even identified each moose by naming them. She worked on quilt pieces in her solitude and later made and sold many quilts. When that program ended in 1982 she worked out of the Lochsa Ranger District in recreation.

Gail retired from the Older American Program in July 2003. She spent a total of 24 years with the Forest Service. She enjoyed her workmates and wrote to many of them until the time of her death. In July of 2004 she moved to Portland to spend her retiring years with her daughter and grandchildren.

Gail is survived by her daughter Ledora Ann Hampton and grandchildren, Sheri, Jim, Kenny and Kim; four great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6 at the Kamiah Community Presbyterian Church in Kamiah. Reverend Luann Howard will officiate.

Another memorial service will be held in Portland at a later date to be announced.

Remembrances may be made to the Salvation Army.

Arrangements are by Trenary Funeral Home of Kooskia.
