Happenings on the Hilltop…

   There were four tables of raucous pinochle players at the Lodge on Sunday. High score was won by Fred Borders, low was won by Ione Smith, and pinochle was won by Bill Barteau and Minnie West.

   Edith Redekopp was top loser in Division 3 of TOPs with a loss of 27.4 pounds for 2007. Yaay Edith! The TOPS group in Weippe meets every Thursday morning at 8 a.m. at the Alanon building which is in front of the Weippe Community Hall. You may call Dolores Watson at 435-4481 for more information.

   Thursday, February 28 the lunch menu at the Weippe Senior Meal Site is a baked potato bar with green salad and applesauce.

   For local farmers that may be planning to give farm tours, hire employees, have volunteers or apprentices on your land, process your farm product to sell as value added, or wonder how to pick a good insurance agent for your farm, there will be a workshop in Orofino on April 18. You can call (208) 883-3462 for questions or to enroll. This workshop is sponsored by Rural Roots, U of I Extension, Three Rivers RC&D and RMA.

   A juggling class is being offered at the Weippe Library on Fridays, time to be determined. Call 435-4058 to sign up.

   Preschool story time is Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. at the Library. The top for March 4 is Bedtime and the story will be I am not sleepy and I will not go to bed.

   A group is meeting at the Discovery Center to learn about and practice Tai Chi beginning Wednesday, 5 p.m. March 12. Call Nancy at 435-4714 for info.

   Ione Smith says she is feeling much better. She is on a new medication which seems to be working much better on her knee.

   Linda Soles’ chicken did a solo act and presented her with an egg. Lucky Linda.

   Barbara Everett of the Weippe Heritage Society/Museum says the Society has received a $100 donation from Bev Bailey of Creative Gifts from the sale of the Gorilla items. Bev still has some tees and other items for sale to benefit the gorilla fund. As the gorilla image on the tower needs to be maintained, a fund is being kept to do this.

   Mike Green, honorary member of the Weippe Hilltop Heritage Society, is the new editor of the Hilltop Heritage newsletter. Mike is the son of Joe and Marie Green.

   Jerry and Nancy Johnstun had house guests, Rich and Kathy Cleavenger of Portland, over President's Day weekend. Rich, Kathy and Jerry were students together at the University of Idaho.

   Competition for the U.N. Pilgrimage for Youth Program was held Sunday, Feb. 24, at the Oddfellow and Rebekah Lodge in Orofino. Competition consisted of a written exam and a speech contest. The winner is Andrew Blain of Timberline High School.

   This program is funded by the sale of raffle tickets. The prize is a hamper full of linens and other items. Tickets can be purchased at MaryAnn’s and from any Rebekah Lodge member.

   Congratulations to the THS Cheer Squad for placing third at the Orofino competition!

   Several of Timberline's FCCLA members qualified to compete at the state STAR event competition this week. On Wednesday, the group traveled to Craigmont to compete in the district STAR events and many students received awards. You can find the student’s names in this week’s Timberliners.

   Our kids are doing great things. Kudos to the teachers, parents and staff at Timberline for helping them achieve these honors.

   Wednesday night at 6 p.m. there will be a CEDA Board meeting at Weippe City Hall. Marge Kuchynka will give an update on the Deyo Reservoir project. Friends of the Deyo Reservoir project are still exploring potential development options. They would welcome interested parties to assist in this endeavor. Please come to the meeting and lend your support.
