As everyone in town has surely noticed, there’s something going on at the old
Headquarters Bar & Café. I caught up with the new owner Dan Vaughn and he
invited me in for a tour and information.
His crew has gutted the entire inside for a complete remodeling job, including rewiring and insulating the entire building and making it handicap accessible.
His plans are to open "Gold Pan Dan’s" the end of May as a private club with yearly memberships and to also have the building available to rent for catered events. It will offer a full bar and kitchen, a bandstand and dance area, new fireplace, pool table, shuffleboard and big screen TV. There will be exterior work done when the weather permits.
Wanting to hold on to some of the history of the place, Dan kept plans to use the original bar and the long counter and stools from the cafe.
Dan has several other successful businesses; he owns and operates the Bond Mine located on Clearwater Gulch. He has purchased a new tunneling machine that is capable of anywhere from 25' to 100' in an 8 hour day and underground dump trucks. He also has a full crew in Weippe installing a ½ million dollar upgrade which will accommodate 25 to 50 ton of ore a day. More ore..more gold...which Dan enthusiastically states, it’s going to be a good year, gold is currently $950 an oz.
Dan is also owner of Advanced Building Inc. which sells P2000 insulation, located at the old Medley Cedar Mill near Weippe. This is the type of insulation that will be used in his remodeling and was also used in the remodeling of Studio 205.
The Wink-N-Smile will reopen March 13, Wednesday & Thursday from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Friday & Saturday 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Judo Tournament
Sensei Rich Barlow of the Timberline Dojo had a wonderful turnout of Judokas for the High Mountain Open Judo Championships in McCall on Saturday, Feb. 23. A large section of the stands were filled by Hilltop family and friends cheering on the 20 different kids that were competing. All of the kids did a great job, and Timberline brought home 14 medals.
Kayla Hodges competed with batsu-gun and took 1st place in the 16 and under, and 1st place in the senior Brown/Black Belts.
Dustin Hodges fought like a great Bushi in an astounding 11 matches, and took home 2nd and 3rd in the light, and middle weight Brown Belt divisions.
Girls 7-8 year olds were swept by the Timberline Judo Club, 1st place, Keaton Kikuyama, 2nd place, Tana Umphenour , 3rd place, Josey Stemrich. Way to go girls!
Maurice Willis took 3rd place in the boys 7-8 year olds. In the 9-10 year old girls, Tori Skiles was the 2nd place winner, and Annika Cook was right there with her, with the 3rd place win.
Mattie Brouwers had the 2nd place win for the 11-12 year old girls light weight division, and in the 11-12 year old girls middle weight division, Michaela Willis-Harris took the 1st place spot, and Aspen Jared had 2nd place. Schree McIntosh was the 2nd place winner in the girls 13-14 year olds.
All of the kids did such a great job, they should be proud of themselves, I know we all are. Thanks to Jennifer Billups and Carmen Syed for providing the judo information.
