Elsie Stillman, 87, Orofino
She loved dogs and cats and gave many of them a home. She worked at the Otho Bovey home and on June 24, 1949, she married Arthur Stillman in Grangeville. They attended meetings of Jehovah’s Witnesses at Orofino and Weippe. They lived at Nezperce and later they moved to Weippe, where they lived until Art’s death on June 12, 1985. Upon falling, Elsie was admitted to Clearwater Health & Rehabilitation and after about five years she passed away there. Elsie died on Feb. 11, 2008. She was also preceded in death by her parents, brother Ervin, and sister Edna. Burial will be beside her husband Arthur at Normal Hill Cemetery in Lewiston. There will be no graveside services. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008 at Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall in Orofino. Kelly Zink of Weippe will officiate. Trenary Funeral Home of Kooskia is assisting the family. |

James “Jim” Carlile, 65, Boise James "Jim" S. Carlile, 65, passed away Feb 9, 2008 at St Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. James was born May 24, 1941 in Lewiston. He lived in the Orofino area when a youngster. He served in the US Army with an honorable discharge. He married Irene Cooke on July 17, 1999 in Worthington, MN in the home of her mother, Eleen Yackley. James leaves behind his wife Irene, their dogs Toby and Taz Man and cats Stubby and Turbo, also eight children and step-brothers Don and John Herdon and his mother Margaret Herndon of Lewiston. James was preceded in death by his stepfather Leslie Herndon, and step-brothers. James was cremated and his ashes will be spread at a later date. "James, we know you are giving God a hard time, but behave." My Friend, My Brother In the times of our great-great grandfathers you would have been a great warrior and hunter, To roam this great land as once did our brothers before us, to be free as the great buffalo once were. But, like all great warriors before you, the time has come for you to begin a new journey, for you have finished your "Circle of Life" on Mother Earth. Mark D. Ewing, 48 Mark Dana Jay Ewing, 48, of Nashville, TN, and formerly of the Orofino and Lewiston areas, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at the University Medical Center in Nashvillle. A memorial service, to take place in Lewiston, will be announced at a later date. |

Louise Turner, 85, Kamiah
Louise grew up and attended school at Grangeville. She was the Idaho County Spelling champion when she was in the fourth grade. She was always a hard worker and worked on the family farm throughout her school years. She graduated from Grangeville High School and then attended Kennman Business School in Spokane, WA. Louise met her husband, Ralph Turner and they were married Nov. 1, 1941. Louise was devoted to her family and their family farm on Doty Ridge near Kamiah. Louise was involved in all aspects of the farm operation. Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; her parents, John and Nanny Lamb; her brothers, Volney, Lester and John Lamb; her sister Vera Turner; and son-in-law, Jim Minnick. Louise is survived by her brother, Ralph Lamb; her children Bonnie Harpham, Beth Minnick, and Tom Turner; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral Services for Louise were held Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008 at Trenary Funeral Home Chapel in Kooskia. Reverend Art Finney will officiate. Interment will be at Winona/Mt. Zion Cemetery near Kamiah. A covered dish dinner will be at the Kamiah Community Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are by Trenary Funeral Home, Kooskia. |

Schuyler Mapes Carey, 80 Schuyler Mapes Carey passed away Feb. 4, 2008 at Clearwater Valley Hospital from complications of pneumonia. Schuyler was an old timer from the Teakean, Cavendish, Ahsahka area. He was 80. Schuyler was born June 27, 1927 to William and Eunice Mapes Carey. He attended grade school at Freeman Creek and high school at Orofino. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Corporal, his duties first being as an engineer and later as a cook. Schuyler worked for Carney Pole Yard, for Potlatch and later for Clearwater Road Dept. He liked visiting with people in the bakery, the barber shop and various other places of business and enjoyed watching people play pool. His wife and others called him “the street walker” as he walked a lot for his health. Schuyler also used to buy candy and hand it out at some of his favorite places. He married W. June Cook Carey in 1966 and they had a daughter, Kimberley L. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and brother William Marion Carey. He is survived by his daughter Kimberley of Ocean City, OR, a stepdaughter Toni (Alan) Schmirler, stepson David Statler of Orofino, granddaughter Alana (John) Hatcher of Sandpoint and three grandsons, Daryl (Darcey) Schmirler of Spokane, WA, Greg Green and Ryan Green of Ocean City, OR. A memorial service for Schuyler will be held in June. |

John G. Walton, 91, Richland, WA John Gerald Walton, 91, of Richland, WA passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008 at Rosetta Memory Care Center in Richland due to the infirmities of age. He was born Oct. 9, 1916 in San Bernardino, CA to Jim H. and Erma N. Walton. He was the fifth of 10 children. He spent his childhood in the San Francisco Bay area. John was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp during the depression. He served in the Army during World War II and continued that service until 1956. He owned and operated Walton’s Automotive in Weippe for several years. While in Weippe he was instrumental in helping to incorporate the town and to get the first water and sewer system there. He was Weippe’s first City Clerk. He also served as the last Justice of the Peace in Weippe, then became the Municipal Judge in both Weippe and Pierce. He returned to college later in his life and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Police Science from Washington State University at Pullman. He was Police Judge in Palouse, WA for several years. After moving to the Tri Cities area he owned and operated Appliance and Home Repair in Richland. He retired from that business in 1986 at the age of 70. He was an active member in the CCC Alumni Association. He eloped and married his 15 year old sweetheart, Mildred L. Thompson June 21, 1941 in Reno, NV. They celebrated 66 years of marriage last June. John is survived by his wife, Mildred, of Richland, brothers Larry Walton of California and Leo Walton of Pennsylvania, sister Jamie Morris of Port Ludlow, WA, son Jon and Kristy Walton of Orofino, daughters Mildred Priebe of Portland, OR and Michal and Ron Beck of Pierce, grandchildren Susan (Priebe) Grove of Vancouver, WA, Curtis Priebe of Tacoma, WA, Mark and Jenna Walton of Orofino, Caralyn (Walton) and Brad McCollum, Weippe, Jonathan and Sveta Berreth, Tigard, OR, Phillip and Dawn Berreth, Lewiston, Charles Berreth of Weippe, and Jason and Michelle Berreth of Weippe. He is also survived by 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers Jim, Dick, and Doug Walton, sisters Gwen Parker and twins Lil Fairbanks and Bib Walters. At his request no services were held. John wished to be cremated and his ashes sprinkled on San Francisco Bay, CA. The Neptune Society was in charge of those arrangements. |
