OHS Track and Field parents’ meeting

   The Orofino High School Track and Field Team will host a parents’ meeting for all interested student athletes, their parents and community members on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the OHS library.

   All parents or guardians are encouraged to attend.  Please contact Coach Scott Schochler at OHS for more information.

Asotin outlasts Orofino for overtime win

   A three-point play from Nate Dalton helped spur Asotin in overtime, as the Panthers outlasted Orofino Feb. 3. The Panthers came out on top 69-66 in the nonleague contest.

   The Maniacs led by eight in the fourth quarter before Asotin rallied to tie the game.

   Asotin outscored the Maniacs 7-4 in the OT.

   Michael Welch paced the Maniacs with 23 points. Trevor Bansemer added 19.

Nezperce rolls to win over Orofino

   Nezperce locked down on Orofino in general and leading scorer Michael Welch in particular as the Indians rolled to a nonleague win Feb. 5, defeating the Maniacs 61-32.

   The Maniacs were limited to 17 points in the first three periods. Orofino had no points in the third quarter until hitting two late free throws.

   The Indians concentrated defense on Michael Welch, holding him to four points for the game. Trevor Bansemer had 16 points for the Maniacs.

Clearwater Valley shoots down Orofino

   Clearwater Valley shot an impressive 57 percent from the field to take down Orofino in a nonleague tilt Feb. 2, defeating the Maniacs 76-59.

   The 3A Maniacs came out of the gate going 4-for-5 from 3-point land, but the 1A Rams answered with a 15-5 second quarter and never gave up the lead.

   Michael Welch led Orofino with 24 points. Tyler Meeks and Trevor Bansemer added 14 and 12 respectively.

District II Tournament

Lewis County ends Timberline tournament hopes

   Timberline tournament hopes ended Feb. 6 with a loss to Lewis County. The Lady Spartans lost the loser out contest 68-48 in 1A Division I District II tournament play.  

   Fifth-seeded Lewis County found its touch from the perimeter, jumping out to an 18-8 first quarter lead and connecting eight times from the 3-point range by game’s end.

   Timberline senior post Lundyn Jared led her squad with 25 points.

Spartans top Summit for Whitepine win

   Up by three points with seconds remaining, Timberline fouled Summit's Dylan Prigge before he had a chance to try a 3-pointer, and the Spartans held on for a Whitepine League win Feb. 2, winning 53-50.

   Prigge missed the first free throw, and Timberline was able to rebound.

   The Spartans (10-7, 4-6) were down by three at the start of the fourth, but were able to take charge when Prigge went to the bench with foul trouble.

   Colton Jared canned three 3-pointers and scored 17 points for Timberline while Austin Blain added 10.

Bulldogs defeat Spartans

   A strong second quarter gave Genesee the upper hand as the Bulldogs went on to defeat Timberline 54-33 Feb. 4.

   Genesee outscored the Spartans 25-8 in the second quarter.

   Colton Jared scored 13 for Timberline.

Three Orofino wrestlers earn first place at Bonners Ferry tournament

   The Orofino Maniac wrestlers traveled to Bonners Ferry for a tournament Feb. 5-6.

   Preston Walker took first place at 130 lbs. Michael Skinner took first place at 135 lbs and Bo Brooks took first place at 152 lbs.

   Jesse Faler took fourth place at 189 lbs, just short of earning a medal. Many of the Maniac wrestlers were only steps away from getting into the medal rounds.

   Senior night, Feb. 9, was Orofino’s last home meet. District wrestling in Rathdrum is Feb. 19.
