Museum News

Everet Martin, President of the Weippe Heritage Society, announces the Museum will soon have copies of Eldon Hutchins’ new book.

Eldon, formerly of Weippe, now lives in the Lewiston Orchards and is 86-years-old. He lost his sight about ten years ago. He has written two books, one was about Lewis and Clark and was in poem form. The second book includes stories from the area. He dictates the books, his daughter, Jeannie Hafer of Grangeville, types them. Melissa Burger did the cover design. The last story in the latest book is called Justifiable Homicide and goes something like this…. There was a group hunt of about 12 people which included Eldon, his three older brothers, Dr. Oral of Pendleton, OR, Les and Laurence of Weippe, his father in law Harvey Wilson and three brothers-in-law - Q. Hobbs, Lloyd Martin, and Gordon Hueth. They also had Reggie's Wise's grandfather from South Caroline.

Les, Eldon and Les's son Elwin, who had just turned 14 and was looking forward to his first big game hunt, were eating lunch when they heard a noise down over the hillside. They went to investigate and found a medium sized bear up a tree complaining as if it had a tummy ache. They said to one another, “Well, should we shoot him? No, let's leave him alone, he may find his mom and grow up to be a big bear”.

Elwin went under the tree to see the bear. When he went around one side the bear would retreat to the other side. While Elwin was looking up at the bear, the bear had a sudden explosion of purple diarrhea which flew out, hit Elwin on the side of the head, went in his ear and on his neck. At that, Elwin pointed the gun and shot the bear.

At the time he didn't want them to tell anyone but he thinks it is funny now. I hope he still thinks it is funny or Everet and I might hear about it.

There have been complaints of people riding snowcats at high speeds on Main Street in the early morning hours. Those with complaints have been advised to contact the sheriff’s office.

Empire Lumber has submitted a water right application to the Idaho Dept. of Water Resources. They are requesting 4.5 CFS or approximately 2000 gallons per minute for commercial use and fire protection. The city will submit a letter of protest explaining our concern for our water supply and the problems encountered prior to locating our current source.

Weather

The weather presented several challenges this week. One was the power outage. Our heartfelt appreciation for the people who get out of their warm beds and go out in the snow and dark to get our power up and running.

The other was the heavy snowfall. Thanks to the Highway Department personnel that keep our driveways and local roads open. What would we do without them?
