2008 Property Tax Reduction applicants must prove lawful presence in US
Persons applying for the 2008 property tax reduction must prove their lawful presence in the United States. Documentation is required this year for both applicant and spouse.
Acceptable forms of identification are social security 1099, driver’s license, state issued identification card, military card, passport, social security card and federal form W-2.
The Circuit Breaker applications are available between Jan. 2 and April 15 at the Clearwater County assessor’s office. Bring copies of your 2007 federal income tax return (if filing), social security form 1009 and proof of all other income. Assessor’s phone number is 476-7042. The Circuit Breaker program must be applied for every year. Reduction amount is based on the previous year’s (2007) income for the applicant and spouse. The reduction will apply to your 2008 tax bill. The income cannot exceed $28,000.
Medical expenses not covered by insurance can be deducted.
Meeting places and dates are: 9 to 11:30 a. m. March 12 at Weippe City Hall; Pierce Library March 12 from 1 to 2:30 p. m. and at the Elk River City Hall March 19 from 10:30 to 11:30 a. m.
To qualify applicants must meet one of these requirements by Jan. 1. They are:
Age 65 or older; widow/widower (any age); veteran, with at least 10% service connected disability or receiving VA pension for a non-service connected disability; disabled, recognized by social security/railroad/civil service; blind; orphan under age 18 or former prisoner of war/hostage.
New for 2008-Applicants must provide documentation and receipts along with the medical expense form. Receipts can be printouts from hospitals, doctors, pharmacies and other medical providers.
Cancelled checks are acceptable only if accompanied by the corresponding bill from the provider. A cancelled check for medical insurance is acceptable. Medical exception-If you are filing a federal income tax return and file a schedule A for medical deductions a copy of your Schedule A will suffice as proof.
