20 Years Ago

   John Lacy will retire Feb. 1 after 28 years with Washington Water Power.

   Orofino Maniac wrestlers competing this year are Frederick Dahlerg, Ben English, Garett Bretz, Marc Koppang, Pat Dempsey, Guy Nielsen, Mike Fitzgerald, Jeff Schwartz, Brad Fitzgerald, Duane Call, Garth Gimmestad, Aaron Morgan, Jason Anderson, Wade Alonzo, and Chad Bryant. Monty Davis coaches the team.

   Despite the 8 to 10 degree weather steelhead fishermen are on the Clearwater River. The river was frozen over with ice and covered with snow by the bridge. Six miles down river from the bridge the river was running unhindered by either ice or snow.

25 Years Ago

   County officers received their oath of office conducted by holdover Commissioner Bill Crutcher. Sworn in were Ethel Hunter, assessor, Rhoda Hunter, coroner, Mary Jane Wilmarth, treasurer, Allen Medalen, clerk-auditor-recorder, Steve Calhoun, prosecuting attorney and X.E. Durant and Don Ponozzo, commissioners.

   December patrol leaders at the Orofino Elementary School were Michelle Bryant, Cori Irby, captains, Tisha Shuster, Sharon Hester, Brenda Milligan and Pat Dempsey, patrolmen.

   Hoopshoot champion-Mary Jo Musselman, eight year old daughter of Joanne and Dan Musselman, shot her way to the state championship in Caldwell.

30 Years Ago

   A flock of bald eagles have returned to the Dworshak Dam area to resume fishing in the area below the dam.

   Rev. Ron Beeman is coming from Riggins to preach at the Ahsahka Church.

   Racing to a 18-8 first quarter lead the Timberline Spartans held on for a 57-52 win over the Potlatch Loggers. David Jeter with 14 and Mike Vaughn with 12 led the scoring while Mark Adams added 10.

   Rob Wright hit 22 of his 25 free throws to qualify in the boy’s 12-13 year old division finals.

   Bill White received a plaque from County Extension Agent Norm Fitzsimmons, for outstanding service to the Clearwater County Fair for the past seven years.

35 Years Ago

   Fire damage at the Clearwater Cleaners brought $35,000 damages for the worst fire loss in the past year reports Fire Chief  Elbert Snyder.

   Team members of the Orofino High School basketball team are Randy Parsons, Chad Easterbrook, Jerry Nelsen, Terry Nygaard, Ted Brown, Jon Jones, Nick Larrinaga, Claude Blackburn, Mark Nygaard, Speedy Greene, Loren Cannon and Dan Wilson. Skip Wilson coaches the team.

   Grade 2 - Mrs. DeMain-Earning all “A’s” in the weekly spelling bee were Randy Johnson, Jana Pfefferkorn, Rolaine Presnell, Jimmy Moody, Kerry Taylor, Gary Dub, Chris Shawver, Johnny Kress, Angela Spinella, Thea Knapp, and Ann Marie Markuson.

40 Years Ago

   A free throw by Tom Roof with 17 seconds to go clinched a 64-63 victory for the Orofino Maniacs over the Kendrick Tigers. High point for Orofino was Ted Roof with 15 and Ron Choate with 14.

   The Orofino “B” squad ran away from the visitors with a 68-31 defeat over Kendrick. Rick Chase led the hosts with 20 points, Dan Ripley and Bud Henneberg had nine each. Others scoring were Clark Owsley and Mike Bessent 5 each, Ted Scoles 4 and Glen Holloway 2.

   Grade 4 - Mrs. Wise-The following have had perfect attendance for the past 10 weeks, Douglas Adams, Allan Bonner, Wayne Gale, Robert Lathrop, Lana Nelson, Steve Strottmann and Debbie Couville.

   Jean’s Bakery is moving to the Johnson Ave. building formerly occupied by Empire Café.

50 Years Ago

   Completion in August of the new $550,000 Clearwater Valley Hospital to bring increased  medical care to people in the upper Clearwater River area was probably the most significant news event in 1957.

   Orofino High School cheerleaders are Jerry Ann Michels, Nancy Oud, Loretta Samuels, Penny Erbst, and Carol Isabelle.

55 Years Ago

   Orofino won its fourth basketball game of the season knocking over Lewiston 61-57. Larry Blenden and Duane Millard turned in some nice shooting from outside while Wilbur Wilson’s driving was highly effective.
