Lady Maniacs victorious on senior night

   The Lady Maniacs proved victorious on Senior Night, putting up 21 points in the third quarter to pull away for a 45-35 win over St. Maries.

   Mikayla Moser led the way with 18 points for the Maniacs, while Alyssa Erlewine chipped in 10.

Maniacs hold off Grangeville

   Trailing by one at the half, the Orofino Maniacs built up a 13-point lead before holding off Grangeville 62-55 in nonleague action Jan. 19.

   The Bulldogs and Maniacs exchanged hefty runs in a high-scoring fourth quarter, but Orofino clamped down late in the period.

   Michael Welch provided just over half of the Maniacs' total scoring 32 points on the night.

   Seth Melton had 13 points, while Trevor Bansemer had 10 rebounds for Orofino. David Stewart paced the Bulldogs with 19 points.

Kamiah defeats Orofino Maniacs

   In a nonleague matchup Kamiah defeated Orofino 51-44, despite what Kamiah coach Ryan Ball felt was sloppy play by the Kubs.

   "We got outplayed, outcoached and outworked," Ball said. "We had a few guys bring some effort and we got a lot of luck."

   Trevor Bansemer scored 24 points for the Maniacs. Michael Welch added 14.

Spartans hold off Potlatch in Whitepine showdown

   Timberline defeated Potlatch 73-68 Jan. 23 in a Whitepine league showdown.

   Timberline coach Jake Nelson called timeout with five minutes remaining in the game, his team trailing 60-53.

   "I told the guys, 'If you want it, you have to go and get it,'" Nelson said.

   The Spartans proceeded to hit ten free throws in a row to regain the lead and go on for the win.

   Colton Jared scored 24 points, including four three-pointers, while Austin Blain added 16 for the Spartans. Dustin Hodges made 11.

Timberline routs Highland

   Timberline put up 81 field goal attempts in a Whitepine League rout of Highland Jan. 19, winning 79-31.

   The Spartans used full-court pressure to force frequent turnovers against the winless Huskies.

   "We went to our press to take control of the game," Timberline coach Jake Nelson said. "On offense I don't think we had a possession that lasted longer than five seconds."

   Colton Jared led Timberline with 21 points and Kendrick Jared had 19. Dustin Hodges had a double-double - pulling down 18 rebounds to go with 16 points.

   Undefeated Lapwai made short work of the Lady Spartans, winning 94-22 in a Whitepine league game Jan. 23.

   Ariel Jared and Morgan Newcome each had three-point goals for the Spartans.

OHS wrestling takes third in Maniac tournament

   The Orofino Maniac wrestling team took third place overall during the Maniac tournament at OHS Jan. 15-16, with three Orofino wrestlers claiming a title. Seventeen teams were in attendance.

   Michael Skinner took first place senior in the 135 pound class. Bo Brooks took first place senior in the 152 pound weight class. David Upton took first place senior in the 171 pound weight class.

   Todd Kobeilusz battled it out for third place senior in the 160 pound weight class, and Jesse Faler earned fourth place senior for the 189 pound weight class.

   Garth Schilling defaulted due to injury; otherwise he would very likely have been in the finals. Brandon Wolfe made the ultimate sacrifice when he was knocked out of the competition by his own teammate, another senior in the 189 pound weight class.

   Five other Orofino wrestlers who contributed to the team’s overall standing were Nick Muller, Ian Barrett, RJ Lineham, Cody Cordle and Larry Dana.

Clearwater Classic

   It was reported that no Orofino wrestlers medaled in the Clearwater Classic tournament Jan. 22-23.
