Walker named United States Super Teen
Orofino High School
senior James Walker has been named one of Next Step Magazine’s United
States Super Teens. He will be featured on the cover of the March/April edition.
Next Step Magazine serves high school and college students in finding scholarship opportunities, familiarizing themselves with the best colleges and offers information relating to college prices and education in general.
Walker learned of the opportunity to become a United States Super Teen through his guidance counselor, Mrs. Beck. He filled out an application that focused on his college plans, his current high school activities and his academic achievements. While the award includes no scholarship, the recognition often opens the door to offers from top colleges.
Walker says this has been his busiest year ever. He serves as president of the student body and Youth Legislature at OHS. He is president of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council and a board member on the Idaho Teen Dating Violence Prevention & Awareness Council. He is a member of Idaho Drug Free Youth, ManiYac Pride, National Honor Society, and is a Maniac Mentor.
He also serves as an elementary teacher’s assistant in Mrs. Moore’s sixth grade class. He will attend YMCA Youth Government in April, where he has been named Speaker of the House. In his spare time, he is working out to prepare for track season.
Walker has narrowed his college choices to four, and is planning to pursue a degree in business management.
Walker gave much credit to his parents, Ruth and Stanton Walker. “I couldn’t have received this honor without all of the support I have received from my parents the last couple of years,” he said. “They have always been there for me when times have been tough, and I love them both very much.”
