Orofino’s Seth Johnson to represent central Idaho at National 4-H Conference
Seth Johnson, a senior at
Orofino
High School, was selected to represent Idaho at the National 4-H Conference this
spring. in Washington D.C. Seth is the only member from central Idaho to attend.
Ten 4-H members from each state are selected for their achievements through 4-H, especially in leadership. Seth, son of Karen Hunter of Orofino, applied for the National Conference in November and was easily selected as one of the delegates from Idaho. Operation Military Kids, (a branch of 4-H, which donates funds to help finance activities for children of the military) contributed $850 toward Seth’s trip to Washington D.C.
Orofino’s delegate has been involved with 4-H for the past eight years, beginning at the age of ten, in the field of dog training. Seth continued with 4-H, cultivating and refining skills such as cooking, sewing, child care, archery, backpacking, and rifle instruction. He also sat on the planning committee a few years ago for 4-H’s “Know Your Government,” offering valuable insight and experience in attending this year’s conference at the national level.
When asked what he has learned through his involvement with 4-H, he is quick to respond. “Lifeskills. From survival and leadership, and responsibility, to social skills.”
The Conference will involve more than 300 delegates in strategic planning for the future of 4-H. Delegates to the conference will meet in consulting groups to discuss plans for 4-H and the Cooperative Extension System, as well as with officials from USDA and the National 4-H Council.
Recommendations of the delegates will go to all the states, national leaders, and others involved in determining programs. Idaho’s 4-H-ers will meet with the state’s senators and representatives at the Capitol.
Upon their return, delegates share conference information with their schools and various 4-H gatherings.
Congratulations, Seth! Orofino, indeed, can be proud.
