Arlene Leslie, 83, Orofino

   Arlene Leslie, Orofino, passed away Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. She was 83.

   Arlene was born to Effi and Alvin Baker Dec. 25, 1924, in Long Beach, CA. She was in the United States Navy Waves. In 1944, after leaving the Navy, she attended college at Louisiana receiving her teaching degree.

   She taught in Saudi Arabia for two years.  Upon coming back to the United States she taught in Big Bear, CA. At the age of 53 she retired and moved to Orofino.

   She touched so many lives and will be greatly missed.

Darryl Scott Harriott, 49, Orofino

   Darryl Scott Harriott of Orofino died of natural causes Jan. 15, 2008 at his home. He was 49.

   He owned and operated a restaurant, A Taste of East Coast, in Orofino and enjoyed being a vendor at the county fair.

   He was born Nov. 30, 1958 in Pattersen, NJ.

   Darryl loved his family first and cooking second. He worked in construction for most of his life, until his knees gave out. That is when he decided to do something he loved most which was cooking.

   He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed helping others start new lives.

   Darryl is survived by his wife Cheryl; a sister, Gerilyn and husband Ralph Stella, and their three children, Michelle, Shayna and Taylor, of Sussex, NJ;  his parents, Don and Geraldine Harriott of St. Petersburg, FL; two sons, Carmen and Christopher; and three stepchildren, Josh, Jackie and Jessica. He was a step grandparent.

   He will be missed and was greatly loved by his family.

   A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Covenant House Christian Center in Orofino.

David Byers Sanderson, 64, Deary

   David Byers (Smokey) Sanderson was born Sept. 18, 1943, to Byers and Eva Sanderson of Bovill. He passed away on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at his home in Deary. David attended school in Bovill and Deary until he started driving log truck at the age of 17.

   He met and married Margie Halseth in 1965. They lived in Deary and raised four children. He was retired at the time of his death but drove logging truck for 47 years for various logging companies.

   Among David’s survivors are his wife, Margie at the family home in Deary, and sisters Jerry Squires of Orofino, Janice Wallace of Alaska and Karen Sanderson of Mukilteo, WA.

John I. Martin, 78, Pierce

   John Ivan Martin passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, in Pierce. He was 78.

   He was born Jan. 3, 1930, at Orofino, to Maynard Howard (Cy) Martin and Connie Garskiewietz Martin. He attended Lewiston High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953, reaching the rank of private first-class.

   John married Jane Vale Olmstead.

   In his early years, John was a busboy at the Raymond Hotel in Lewiston. He went to work at the age of 15 for P.F.I. as a sawyer in the woods on the North Fork of the Clearwater River at Headquarters. He worked many years on the log drive in the spring. He also logged in Montana, Oregon, Wyoming and Alaska.

   He worked on the Alaska Pipeline on the North Slope. Just before retiring, he worked as a welder for Caulkins in Spokane. He lived in Hayden Lake moving to Pierce after retirement.

   John was a member for 50 years of the Masonic Lodge-Scottish Rite. He was also a Shriner for many years. He was a great cook. He attended the log drive reunion at Pink House Hole in Orofino each year. He was an avid fly fisherman, hunter, wood whittler and Denver Bronco’s fan. He enjoyed spending time with his daughters and grandkids.

   John is survived by his daughters, Rebecca J. Martin of Winnemucca, NV, and Maria Jo Martin of Clarkston; granddaughter, Sable Lininger of Winnemucca; grandsons, Ryan Girard of Winnemucca, Kory Eberhardt and Quin Eberhardt of Clarkston; great-granddaughters, Carissa Lininger and Kayla Kininger of Winnemucca; and his companion, Ruth Brown of Hayden Lake.

   He was preceded in death by his parents, Connie and Cy Martin; sister, Dolo Christenson; brothers, Wilson Howard (Pee Wee) Martin; and a daughter, Susan Yvonne (Sue) Martin.

   An Irish wake will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Garwood Tavern in Garwood, ID.
