Principal Nelsen provides information on OHS division classification change
By Ronda Nelson
Orofino High School Principal Jerry Nelsen spoke at the Jan. 16 meeting of the Orofino Chamber of Commerce. He provided information on the high school sports division classification change for OHS.
Division classification is based solely on enrollment. As of Jan. 1, 2008, OHS had 359 students. Although District 171 enrollment is down, OHS has a particularly large junior class which will keep enrollment up until year after next.
The classification cycle is a two year cycle made up of a count year and a grace year. Next year is a count year. He stated that he only expects the high school to be in 3A classification for two years, spanning fall of 2008 through 2010.
Orofino will be the only school in District II in the 3A classification, so they will be required to travel to games with Intermountain League schools: Bonners Ferry, Kellogg, Priest River, St. Maries and Timberlake.
The change will most likely result in lower gates as fans will not make the lengthy trips to games. Higher travel costs will result as well. Efforts to minimize increase in costs will include scheduling games for both boys and girls in the same trip, with more than one venue per trip. Three volleyball matches will be played in a single trip.
Although Nelsen petitioned to be allowed to stay in the 2A classification, assent from existing 2A teams was required. Kamiah and Grangeville voted against allowing Orofino to remain in the division.
The new classification will present a number of challenges, but Nelsen stated he believes the students are ready both academically and athletically to meet those challenges.
