Maniacs defeat Salmon River in overtime

The Orofino Maniacs defeated Salmon River 64-59 in overtime Jan. 5. For the second time in as many nights, Orofino’s Michael Welch went to the free throw line, making crucial shots to set up the win.

Welch, who was seven for 10 at the line, and scored 20 points overall, made two key free throws with 1.2 seconds left in regulation time, forcing the overtime.

Orofino had the ball with 40 seconds left and the score tied, but missed a shot and allowed Salmon River to score and go up by two points with 3.8 seconds remaining.

The Maniacs then called timeout and threw the ball deep to midcourt. A subsequent pass to the free-throw line resulted in a foul on Salmon River as Welch went for the ball.

After hitting the free throws, Welch also knocked down a 3-pointer in overtime as the Maniacs made enough foul shots down the stretch to hold off the Savages.

The previous night Welch was fouled on a 3-pointer against Deary with two-tenths of a second left, and hit all three free throws to turn a one-point deficit into a 38-36 Maniac win.

"I was proud of the kids, the way they came back," coach Tony Snyder said.

Trevor Bansemer had a game-high 23 points for Orofino.

First annual Battle of the 6C Courts

Playing to a packed gymnasium Jan. 11, the Timberline Spartans and Orofino Maniacs each  came away with a win in the first annual Battle of the 6C Court. The Orofino girls opened the evening with a 55-35 win over Timberline. The Spartans then defeated the Maniacs 66-55 in the final game of the evening.

Lady Maniacs 55, Lady Spartans 35

The Lady Maniacs went ahead early in the opener and didn’t let up, leading the game from start to finish.

Orofino stuck to their two-pronged game plan: Limit Lundyn Jared's scoring chances, and shoot the ball a lot.

In spite of the pressure, Jared still scored 13 points, but was pestered all night by Amanda Bonner, who scored eight points of her own. Both Jared and Bonner fouled out.

Despite winning by 20 points, Orofino shot a cool 32 percent from the field. Morgan Adams led the Maniacs with 16 points, followed by Alyssa Erlewine with 10 and Shelby Millsap with nine.

"We did a good job of limiting them to one shot," Orofino coach Jerry Nelsen said. "And our fast break game was effective."

Ariel Jared was second in scoring Timberline, with 10 points.
