CLEARWATER TRIBUNE HOME
JANUARY 14, 2010
By Dee Crane
Established in March 2008, by members of the Clearwater Valley Chapter of Idaho Outfitters & Guides Association, ICARE (Cancer Assistance and Recovery Effort) helps people throughout the Clearwater Valley areas who are actively receiving treatment for cancer or other serious illnesses. It is funded by donations and the annual Spring Round-Up, this year scheduled for April 10 in Orofino.
To date, ICARE has benefited 30 families in the communities of Orofino, Pierce, Kamiah, Kooskia, Weippe, Deary, Ferdinand, Harpster and Peck. It has dispersed a total of $13,350.00; $5,000 in 2008, $6,350 in 2009 and $2,000 in 2010. Recipients must fill out an application and the ICARE Team makes the decision whether or not to disperse funds. The process generally is complete within a two week period. The ICARE Team is a group of five area people who will become the Board of Directors once the organization is approved for 501-C3 (non-profit) status. We are currently working toward that classification. Those on the team are Dee Crane, Elizabeth Smith, Barbara Opdahl, Evelyn Kaide & Lynne Swayne.
With the support of caring folks around our communities, ICARE will continue to be a blessing to many others. Our goal is to never turn down a single person due to a lack of funds. Fifty percent of the profits from the Spring Round-Up events are given to the ICARE project as well as the many contributions made throughout the year.
A leather ribbon with a silver heart and red crystal symbolizes that you are a supporter of the ICARE project and as a reminder of those you know who are struggling.
ICARE ‘Wacky-Tacky’ tea party
A new event will be held in February in the ongoing effort to continue the ICARE project. The ICARE ‘Wacky-Tacky’ Tea Party will be just that…. a wacky, tacky, crazy and fun Saturday afternoon event. Dress up in a ‘wacky-tacky’ outfit or costume and enjoy tea, chocolates, wine and silliness knowing that you are helping neighbors and friends in need. This event is Saturday, Feb. 13 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Krystal Café, Johnson Avenue, Orofino. Suggested donation $12.00. Prizes will be awarded for costume winners.
ICARE community yard sale
Again, this year, the ICARE Community Yard Sale will take place at the National Guard Armory (on Hwy 12 in Orofino) on Saturday, March 27 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Set up is from 7-9 a.m. There will be hunting, fishing, camping, tack, household items, antiques and much more! Limited vender spaces are available by contacting Elizabeth Smith or Dee Crane. ICARE benefits by vender space charges and the Foods Booth. Venders keep the money from the sale of their items.
